Before the Glazers ultimately consented to allow Ineos to take over Manchester United in 2023, a former scout from Old Trafford expressed his dismay at seeing one of the most gifted youngsters in world football pass them by.

Marcel Bout, a Dutchman who joined the Red Devils alongside Louis van Gaal and lasted eight years at Old Trafford, was eager for the team to capitalise on its ties to Ajax.

After all, the CEO of the Eredivisie giants at the time was the legendary custodian Edwin van der Sar.

Bout also intended to create a scenario that would have led to Matthijs de Ligt switching from Ajax to Manchester United.

“I told Ed Woodward that Edwin van der Sar had performed here. Now, make a connection to Ajax by means of him,” Bout reminds Algemeen Dagblad. “Matthijs de Ligt, 17, was an Ajax player. Later on, Ajax welcomed Frenkie de Jong.

“Make sure that United strikes a deal for these kinds of players early on so you can always let them develop in the Netherlands for a while,” I advised.

“Because there are so many factors at work within United, (my advice) went ignored.”

Not just Bout was perplexed by Man United’s seeming unwillingness to pay attention to the people who had been brought in to offer recruitment advice.

How he must have wished Ed Woodward and Joel Glazer hadn’t been moonlighting in positions they shouldn’t have been in, and that an ownership group like Ineos was in charge from above.

At the very least, Bout would ultimately get his dream for “Matthijs de Ligt to Man United.” even when it’s quite late.

The £38 million center-half made the round trip to Old Trafford, passing through Bayern Munich and a decade after switching from Ajax to Juventus.

De Ligt is a “phenomenal” piece of business that has the vibe of something from the Ineos era. Sir Jim Ratcliffe is eager to get rid of the “United tax,” therefore Man United refused to give in to Bayern’s demands and overpay until they finally approved a trade on their terms.

Similar to Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro, who had bids from Real Madrid and AC Milan, De Ligt also choose Manchester United over strong interest from other European heavyweights.

The Athletic assert that Paris Saint-Germain, the French champions, contacted his camp.

But United prevailed in the race, just as they had overtaken PSG in Rasmus Hojlund the previous year.

When Barcelona contacted De Ligt’s representatives as well, they were told that Manchester United was in first place.

According to The Athletic, De Ligt made his choice because he wanted to collaborate with Erik ten Hag once more.

When he was a teenager at Ajax, Ten Hag gave him the captain’s armband and predicted he would become the best center-half in world football.

The latest former Ajax star to join Lisandro Martinez, Antony, Andre Onana, Noussair Mazraoui, and others, De Ligt revealed to The Athletic a few months ago that “(Erik ten Hag) was the most important coach for my development.”

He thought I was a capable team player who could set an example for others, even at the age of 18. he might become an excellent captain.

In Friday’s 1-0 victory over Fulham, De Ligt made his Manchester United debut coming off the bench. Given that Harry Maguire and Martinez are playing well together in central defence, Ten Hag might decide to play “if it ain’t broke” against Brighton this weekend.

But the moment for De Ligt will come, and it will come sooner rather than later.

The transfer has not gone over well with the Bayern fans, according to European football analyst David Cartlidge on the On the Continent podcast. “They are getting a young, ball-playing centre-back who has got experience at the elite level.”

And who, in my opinion, still has the ability to be a top-tier centre defender. I believe Man United has performed incredibly well in this trade.

“I think Man United made an incredible play with this. When the window first opened, they were pursuing Jarrad Branthwaite and receiving quotes between £70 and £75 million for him. De Ligt and Mazraoui were acquired for less than that sum.

“Getting two players of that age to contribute to that depth is a great business move. a definite upgrade over what they already have.

“Therefore, they ought to be extremely happy about that.”
