Every utterance from Mikel’s press conference prior to Fulham

Mikel Arteta addressed questions about our trip to Craven Cottage on Sunday in relation to our match against Fulham after our game against West Ham United on Thursday.

The manager talked about trying to turn our opportunities into goals, Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka’s form, and the Hammers’ outcome.

This is what he had to say:

Concerned about potential disruptions to momentum following the West Ham outcome:
It’s about trying to do more, do better, and win games—not about panicking. The team will win a lot of games if they play this way.

Regarding whether this team can play as well as we did against West Ham to win the title:
No, if we don’t make progress in the boxes. Since that’s ultimately what it is, but creating the remainder—yes, you say it’s a record [for touches in the box], but isn’t that incorrect? Since I don’t believe many teams in the league have done that for an extended period of time, I view that as a very positive development.

Regarding Saka and Martinelli feeling under pressure: I’m not sure; there are a lot of games, obviously, but they looked excellent and new, and you don’t look at that when you win. They are young; perhaps the question would be different if they were 35. They definitely have a lot of energy and can continue.

on the necessity of rediscovering their spark in order to ignite:
It’s impossible to produce what the team produces [against West Ham] without a spark. However, what we need is the last thing—the last touch, the last action—that determines whether the ball enters the net or not.

Regarding the strain that our fans’ passion is causing the players: I’m not sure. We want to win, and they are encouraging the team to do so as well. Since the crowd has been exceptional to us, there is nothing we can ask of them; all we can do is give more and receive much more in return.

Regarding the anticipations of our advocates:
They are aware of the narrow margins and undoubtedly want to win. They want to see the team succeed, so we must fulfill their desire.

Regarding worries about finishing fourth if the results don’t go our way: We have to take control of the things that we can control because losing can also place us in second place. There’s no time to focus on other teams; you already see how tough things are for them both now and yesterday, and that won’t change because of the incredible caliber of the league.
