See the encouraging words Mikel Arteta said to his players before their match with Fulham after failing to register a goal against Westham in their previous match
Before our trip to Fulham, Mikel Arteta has asked our players and supporters to maintain composure after we failed to score against West Ham United in our previous match.
After the disappointing home loss to the Hammers, we have only managed to muster one well-earned point at fellow title contenders Liverpool. The manager is aiming for a three-point haul at Craven Cottage to close 2023 on a high note.
On Thursday night, we set a Premier League record for touches inside the box without scoring any goals, but the manager is looking on the bright side of things and believes that a similar attacking effort will most likely result in better outcomes.
“It’s not a panic; it’s about trying to do more, do better, and win games,” Mikel stated at the press conference held prior to the Fulham game. “The team will win a lot of games if they play this way.
“I don’t think many teams in the league have done that for many years, because it’s a record [for touches in the box].” That, in my opinion, is a really good thing.
“It’s impossible to generate what the team generates [against West Ham] without a spark.” However, what matters is the last thing—the last touch, the last action—that determines whether the ball enters the net or not.
The games are coming in thick and fast this time of year, so throughout December, there have been a lot of unexpected outcomes that have packed the top of the table.
At this halfway point in the season, Mikel is aware that 2024 will be full of twists and turns. With only six points separating the top five teams, we could finish the year anywhere from first to fourth.
He continued, “We can be second as well, and winning we can be first so we have to do what we can control,” in response to the prospect of finishing fourth.
“It is not time to consider other teams. You can see how tough it is for other teams, and because of the incredible caliber of the league, things will stay that way.
