The year is almost here, and the holidays are over. Furthermore, Liverpool has a real chance to win large in 2024. The top three teams in the Premier League are still in the running for three more trophies at this halfway point in the season.
Fewer people could have imagined that Liverpool would be this far along in its rebuilding process than Liverpool, and even fewer could have suggested that Manchester City would have dropped as many points as it has. With those two factors combined, Jürgen Klopp’s team is very much in the running for the title.
As usual, Manchester City may embark on an extended winning streak, but it also doesn’t seem likely that Pep Guardiola’s squad will be as good as it was last time out. A closer race to the finish line appears likely, though anything is possible, and Arsenal has a good chance as well.

However, if minute distinctions are going to count for a lot, Liverpool ought to consider making a transfer in January. Despite Wataru Endō leaving for the AFCON, Alexis Mac Allister’s return should cover for the Japanese. Therefore, the team’s current top priority is not a midfield player.
Although it seems unlikely that Liverpool will be able to sign a truly elite holding player in the middle of the season, they should seize the opportunity when it presents itself. If the right opportunity came up, that would be something to consider.
More importantly, though, Liverpool needs to search its defense for a suitable candidate. Although injuries have kept both Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas out of action, both will be back in action this season—Robertson maybe even before the end of the following month—but 2024 will still need to bring in a left-sided defender. This is a good moment to give it a go.

Liverpool needs to add a player who can play on the left side of its center-back tandem in order to replace Virgil van Dijk and give them another option at full-back. Joe Gomez can play every position on the back line, but not at the same time. He will have to start every game at left-back for the next few weeks at the very least, which will drastically reduce the options at the other positions.
Liverpool needs to consider their options at the back as soon as possible because Joël Matip’s contract is up at the end of the season and Van Dijk is now 32 years old. And to bolster a defense that is beginning to show its age, that acquisition might be vital.
It’s not always easy to sign the ideal player during the winter transfer window, as Klopp has said in the past. Liverpool, though, is in a position it probably didn’t expect and one that should be capitalized on.
Long-term priorities for Liverpool should be clear, as should the possibility of winning another Premier League title and perhaps one or two more trophies (the Reds are the favorites to win the Carabao Cup and the Europa League) if they decide to sign a left-sided defender. There will be a lot of names mentioned, but one action might be the difference that prevents Liverpool from asking itself “what if?” in the future.
