Kyle Walker admits his dad ‘reduced him to tears’ after every football match and made him ‘hate’ going to games as Man City star opens up on tough childhood on Sheffield council estate
Kyle Walker acknowledges that his father consistently brought him to tears following each football match, as the Manchester City standout candidly discussed his challenging upbringing.
Walker discussed his childhood and upbringing.
Justified his father’s strictness towards him.
Desires to impart the identical set of principles to his offspring
Walker provided frank and honest perspectives on his challenging upbringing, disclosing the enduring influence of his father’s stringent parenting style. Walker’s childhood on the Lansdowne Estate in Sheffield has greatly influenced his approach to raising his own children. Upon contemplation of his father’s strict discipline, Walker acknowledged that although he harboured resentment towards it initially, it ultimately played a pivotal role in his personal and athletic achievements.
In the BBC Sounds podcast “You’ll Never Beat Kyle Walker,” the Manchester City athlete reflected on how his father’s strict parenting style had influenced his personal development.
“I used to harbour a strong dislike for accompanying my father to football matches.” Regardless of my performance, whether it was good or horrible, I would enter the automobile and find myself overwhelmed with emotions,” he disclosed.
Walker’s father, Michael, who travelled to England from Jamaica during his late adolescence, encountered Walker’s mother, Tracey, shortly after his arrival. Although Walker initially experienced strict discipline, he now acknowledges that his father’s approach was motivated by concern and a wish for his son to thrive. “I don’t hold him responsible for that because it shaped my character and skills as an individual and athlete,” Walker clarified. “During the early stages of my professional journey, I consistently endeavoured to disprove the assertions made by my father.” He performed the action because he had concern or interest in the matter.
Walker has four sons with his wife Annie: Roman, who is 11 years old, Riaan, who is seven years old, Reign, who is five years old, and Rezon, who is just four months old. Furthermore, Walker has fathered two offspring with Lauryn Goodman, specifically a four-year-old son named Kairo and a 12-month-old daughter named Kinara. Walker is resolute in his commitment to impart the same ideals that propelled him to the pinnacle of his sport to all his children, despite the difficulties of raising a blended family.
Walker conveyed a specific need for the feeling of camaraderie that was present on the estate, which he believes his own children are deprived of. Although he recognises the advantages that his riches has provided for his children, Walker asserts that they are not indulged and emphasises the importance of their developing self-amusement skills. “They enjoy the benefits of possessing luxurious possessions, but the children are responsible for amusing themselves.” “They engage in play solely with their male siblings,” he stated.
Occasionally, I desire the ability to place them in a prestigious residence where they can socialise with diverse individuals and cultivate new friendships. During my childhood, it was customary to visit and summon your friends.
Currently, I do not allow my children to emerge victorious when engaging in activities. “If I continue to allow them to be victorious, their eventual defeat will have a distressing impact on them,” he stated.
I exert maximum effort when playing football games in the garden, as I believe it will imbue in them the qualities of perseverance and determination, ultimately leading to their personal growth and success. My father’s parents originated from Jamaica and entrusted him with £200 and a washing machine when he reached the age of 17 in England. Consequently, he inherited it from his parents and then transferred it to me. I strive to minimise repetition as much as possible. However, the valuable lessons he imparted about winning have inspired me to instill the same mindset in the lads.
