Due to the team’s below-average performance this season, Erik ten Hag, Manchester United’s current manager, is coming under increasing pressure. Graham Potter, the former manager of Brighton and Chelsea, has been mentioned by many as a possible replacement for the Red Devils, who are currently seventh in the Premier League and have had a disappointing Champions League run. But Steve McManaman, the former star of Liverpool, has another suggestion.

McManaman has stated that Manchester United would be better off considering former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso for the position rather than Potter after Liverpool and the Old Trafford team drew 0-0 over the weekend. Speaking about Potter, McManaman asked why Manchester United would choose a manager who hasn’t worked in eight months and had a bad experience at Chelsea in an interview with Betfred. He suggested instead looking at Alonso, who is currently leading Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga’s summit.

Alonso is a better choice for one of the most prominent managerial positions in football, according to McManaman, because of his recent success with Bayer Leverkusen. He also doubted that Graham Potter would even be given a chance to be considered for a position as prominent as Erik ten Hag’s departure from Manchester United.

“Why not pick a manager that has just won the league somewhere?” McManaman expressed. “Why not sign Bundesliga leader Xabi Alonso, who plays for Bayer Leverkusen? Why choose a manager who was fired from Chelsea and hasn’t had a job for eight months? I’m not suggesting that Graham Potter failed in this endeavor.

Graham Potter was treated horribly by Chelsea, in my opinion, but I would be shocked if he was considered for a Manchester United roster. I don’t think Erik ten Hag will ever leave Manchester United, but if Graham was considered for one of the most important positions in international football, I would be shocked.”

For his work with Bayer Leverkusen this season, Alonso has received a lot of positive feedback. Thanks to his guidance, the German team now leads the Bundesliga by four points and is guaranteed a spot in the Europa League’s knockout stages. Alonso has a strong chance of being considered to take over as Liverpool’s manager from Jürgen Klopp in the future.
