Breaking News: Erik ten Hag responds to Virgil van Dijk's claim only Liverpool tried to win in draw with Manchester United

Ten Hag was animated

In their goalless draw at Anfield against Liverpool, Erik ten Hag maintains that Manchester United had the better opportunities.

Liverpool made 34 shots on goal, the most in a Premier League game ever without a goal, but United rallied for a point to end their losing streak. Alisson, the Liverpool ‘keeper, faced just one save from Rasmus Hojlund despite six attempts from United.

Virgil van Dijk, the captain of Liverpool, stated that “there was only one team I think that were trying to win the game,” but Alejandro Garnacho and Hojlund, according to Ten Hag, had the better scoring chances.

Ten Hag responded, “It’s his opinion,” after learning of Van Dijk’s remarks. “We could have hurt the opposition even more if we had recovered possession of the ball for three or four passes when we were able to.

“But ultimately, you have to admit, we had the best opportunities for Rasmus Hojlund and Garnacho in open play.

“We need to keep the ball again, get three or four passes in, and get a switch in after the ball regains possession. We are aware of their formidable counterpress. And you can harm them at those times, as we did with the second-half opportunities we had for Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund.”

In their previous nine trips to Anfield, United has not won and has drawn four times. Nevertheless, it was Liverpool’s first home loss of the season—their first clean sheet in six games.

Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans offered a steady and wise presence at center half, while Onana made a crucial save against Luis Diaz in the second half.

Prior to his recall against Bayern Munich on Tuesday, Varane had only started one of the previous 13 games, and Ten Hag praised his presence in the backline. “Absolutely but we know what he is capable of, he has many such performances and I think he did very well as the whole team in the partnership with Jonny Evans,” Ten Hag said.

It was a really good team, very disciplined, and both players led from the back. Andre Onana also had a significant role, but I can mention every player.

Therefore, we ought to have recovered three or four passes when we had the opportunity, and we could have even further injured the opposition.

“But all over in the end, you have to conclude, we had the best chances from open play for Rasmus Hojlund and Garnacho.”
