Before the transfer deadline, Manchester United may add a new central defender, as reported by the Spanish daily Sport.

The Red Devils have already added Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt to their roster, strengthening their centre defensive unit.

Nevertheless, Sport asserts that United is “on the prowl” and may pursue Barcelona’s Andreas Christensen.

At first, the 28-year-old was eager to remain with the Catalan giants, but recently, he has changed his mind.

The former Chelsea player desires to be a central defensive player. He understands that a starting spot at Barcelona is not a given.

At the moment, Barcelona values him at about £21 million. In the event that Christensen wishes to go on, United is willing to sign him.

Unlikely for United to add another centre back
Yoro’s ankle injury early in the preseason proved to be a blow for the Red Devils. His absence is scheduled for November.

With choices like De Ligt, Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, and Jonny Evans, United is still well-equipped in the central defensive area.

Entering the final year of his contract, Lindelof has been connected to a departure. He appears more likely to fulfil his obligation to the Red Devils, though.

The team isn’t expected to spend a lot of money on another centre back. Christensen can also play defensive midfield, but he believes that the backline is where he will spend the majority of his career.

Given the intense rivalry for spots, United head coach Erik ten Hag is unlikely to guarantee the 2021–2022 Champions League victor a regular starting role.

It’s possible that the rumours are agent-driven in an attempt to draw bids from other elite European teams.
