Sekou Kone, a teenage midfielder, is reportedly set to join Manchester United as part of the team’s “long-term plans.”

In order to increase the depth and competition of their first team, United made strategic moves in the transfer market this summer, bringing in Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, and Joshua Zirkzee.

Leny Yoro, who is 18 years old and excellent enough to start right away (when fit) but yet too young to commit to United for ten or more years, was also brought in at a high cost. Due to his potential to become a superstar, talented 16-year-old Chido Obi Martin was plucked from Arsenal’s academy, while 18-year-old Kone now appears to be heading to Manchester after being discovered in his home country of Mali.

According to Fabrizio Romano, United has defeated a few other teams in Kone after being recognised as a talent worth pursuing by “several clubs.”

Kone played for the incredibly talented Mali team that defeated Canada, Mexico, and Argentina to finish third in the Under-17 World Cup the previous year.

The signing of Kone from Guidars FC, a Mali club that has a reputation for producing players who eventually move to Europe, demonstrates Christopher Vivell’s impact at United.

This summer, the previous technical director of Chelsea was temporarily recruited to the redesigned sporting department to help with hiring. Vivell joined RB Leipzig as technical director after serving as Red Bull Salzburg’s head of recruitment and scouting.

In the less well-known football markets, Salzburg has usually done business with Guidars, which is precisely the kind of team. The Austrian team has a history of discovering undeveloped potential, especially in Africa. Two of Salzburg’s current players, Moussa Yeo and Dorgeles Nene, were signed from Guidars.

United seems to be cutting out the middleman by going directly to the source; typically, teams like Salzburg and Leipzig uncover the talent and sell it on for a healthy profit.
