Cole Palmer’s “arrogance” has been called out by Alan Shearer, who also cautioned the Chelsea star that it will be challenging for him to repeat his season-long success. The England international kicked off his second season in the Premier League earlier this week, defeating former rival Manchester City 2-0 at home at Stamford Bridge.

The 22-year-old, who was named PFA Young Player of the Year this week after an incredible season for club and country in which he scored 22 goals and provided 11 assists for the Blues, is undoubtedly under pressure to keep up his good form, as Shearer acknowledged that it will be challenging for the attacking midfielder to duplicate his heroics from the previous season with this Chelsea squad.

The former Newcastle United player lauded Palmer’s “arrogance” on the pitch in an interview with Betfair, but he cautioned that Palmer won’t benefit from the club’s summer business practices. “Cole Palmer needs to go again, and I have no doubt that he will,” the commentator stated. “He ought to savour and accept this moment.

He has such a laid-back appearance and a charmingly haughty demeanour. I adore his strut. He’s expressing, “Give me the ball, I don’t feel pressure,” and he performed in a similar manner the previous campaign. After a season like his, he needs to find a way to return, no matter how challenging it will be in that Chelsea squad since they operate extremely differently from a typical club.”

Shearer continued, “But we’ve seen the talent, we’ve seen the ability, we’ve seen he can score goals and we’ve seen he can handle the pressure.” Shearer said Palmer, like all elite players, must develop a taste for success. The only thing left to do is try again, as this is what the best players do. Palmer needs to do that as well because the best players like what they’ve done, get a taste for it, and decide, “I want more of that.”

Palmer was a strong contender to win the PFA award because of his outstanding performance for his club and his significant contribution to England’s Euro 2024 campaign, which included assisting Ollie Watkins’ dramatic late goal against the Netherlands in the semifinals.

In the final, he scored the equaliser as England suffered a sad 2-1 loss to Spain. “It’s very special, and I just want to say thank you to all the players for recognising me and nominating me,” he said the night he accepted his trophy. Being on the list of past champions is an honour because it contains many outstanding players who have won.

“I kept it on my phone to serve as a daily reminder to myself that it’s a goal worth pursuing. When I initially visited Chelsea, the players there, notably the manager, instantly warmed up to me. Chelsea is a fantastic team with many talented players. Individual accolades are good, too, but I really want to win championships with Chelsea.”
