Palmer: I never wanted to leave Man City but I’m glad I chose Chelsea
Exclusive interview with Cole Palmer: The Chelsea midfielder says he had no desire to leave his childhood team, Manchester City.
Cole Palmer: “I always wanted to stay in Manchester City.” That was not my intention. My goal was to go on loan for a year, return, and be prepared.
Cole Palmer of Chelsea has disclosed that he had intended to stay on loan this season at his boyhood team, Manchester City, but was informed that his only choices were to stay or leave permanently.
On Deadline Day of last summer, the 21-year-old completed an unexpected £40 million move from the Etihad Stadium to Stamford Bridge, and he is now enjoying life in his new home.
One of the season’s best acquisitions, Palmer has quickly established himself as a vital member of Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, tallying eight goals and four assists in 16 Premier League games.
In a challenging season for the Blues, his performances have been a huge plus and have allowed him to establish himself in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

The ‘brilliant’ man-management of Pochettino
Chelsea manager Fernando Pochettino, who recently stated that Palmer has the ability to become as good as former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward Angel Di Maria, has given Palmer high praise.
Palmer remarked, “What a player,” in reference to the parallel. “Obviously, it’s high praise, but I’m a long way away from it.”
Palmer and Pochettino have already forged a strong friendship, and Palmer is impressed with the Argentine’s man-management abilities.
“I’ve noticed about him that with everyone he’s the same, the cooks, the physios, us [the players],” he stated.
“He shows genuine interest in you by asking you questions. It’s outstanding.”
Palmer acknowledges that his start has already surpassed his expectations and now wants to help Chelsea advance to the Carabao Cup final. Palmer has already put on a number of impressive performances, including player-of-the-match work in the 4–4 draw with City in November.
He remarked, “I can’t deny that.” “My goal was to join the team, participate, and demonstrate my abilities.
“But to get in the team straight away and hit the ground running has surprised me to be fair.”
