Done Deal Imminent – Arsenal closer to sealing SECOND transfer business after £60M deal as Edu Gasper reach agreement with Top European Giants for the transfer of 26-year old Veteran star
As they look to sign Getafe striker Borja Mayoral this month, Arsenal has reportedly made a £22 million bid for him, according to the Sun.
In order to strengthen his attack before the second half of 2023–24, Gunners manager Mikel Arteta has been linked to both Dominic Solanke of Bournemouth and Ivan Toney of Brentford.
But Arsenal has moved on to Mayoral, and it will be impossible to sign either of the English pair during the January transfer window.
The North Londoners have been keeping a close eye on the 26-year-old since last November. He finished the previous season with eight league goals, and he has scored 12 goals in 19 games this season.
They have now put in a bid for him, but Getafe has turned it down and is demanding more than £39 million.
Although it’s unclear if Arsenal will make a better offer this time, their recent goal-scoring efforts have highlighted how desperately they need a good number 9, and the former Real Madrid player is the perfect fit.
Along with creating 15 opportunities and registering 21 shots on goal, Mayoral currently has a higher conversion rate than any forward for Arsenal.
It seems unlikely that Getafe, who are currently eighth in La Liga after 19 games, would be interested in losing their top goalscorer midway through the season. Instead, they would prefer to finish in the top six and qualify for Europe the following season.
The Spaniard might be eager to move to the Premier League and support the Gunners’ title challenge this season and in the future, though, if Arsenal makes them an alluring offer.
They have drawn blanks in two of their past three games, and their chances of taking home trophies this season may be compromised if they are unable to find a reliable finisher this month.
Their awful finishing caused them to be eliminated by Liverpool from the FA Cup, so getting Mayoral before the transfer window closes could be crucial.
