Matthijs de Ligt, a central defender for Bayern Munich, is reportedly of interest to Arsenal, according to The Athletic. The 24-year-old Dutchman’s defensive skills appear to be admired by Mikel Arteta’s Gunners.

Due to a long-term injury, defender Jurrien Timber is currently sidelined for Arsenal but is expected to return in 2024.

Takehiro Tomiyasu, another important player, is also injured and will compete in the Asian Championships from January 12–February 10. Arsenal is looking for defensive reinforcements more urgently as a result of these absences.

De Ligt’s transfer is out of the question during the winter transfer window, though. Arsenal views him as a “long-term transfer target” but is wary of him because of financial fair play issues following a sizable summer spending spree of about €235 million.

Regarding Arsenal’s financial status, Arteta recently said, “We are really short of money.” It’s an extremely volatile and sensitive market that shifts swiftly. We’ll attempt to make the best choices and be ready. We want to be stronger, so we will always be open to suggestions on how to make the squad better.

SPORT-BILD claims that Arsenal understands how difficult it would be to acquire de Ligt from Bayern given the state of the record champions’ roster right now.

With players like Noussair Mazroui and Bouna Sarr out with injuries and Minjae Kim competing in the Asian Championship, Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel is looking to bolster his defense.

Due in large part to the injuries he has sustained this season, de Ligt is currently Bayern’s third-choice central defender behind Dayot Upamecano and Minjae Kim. Despite these obstacles, Arsenal is still interested in signing him.

After joining Bayern from Juventus Turin, de Ligt played a crucial role in the defense last season, especially under former manager Julian Nagelsmann.

He is a good fit for the Premier League because of his physicality and aerial strength.
