In his first competitive game as manager, Real Madrid lost 4-2 in extra time to fierce rivals Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup. Julen Lopetegui emphasized that Real Madrid “have to improve in all facets.”
Following a 2-2 draw in regulation time, Atleti’s Saul Niguez and Koke scored two goals in as many seconds during the extra session at Tallinn’s A. Le Coq Arena.
After Diego Costa’s first-minute goal was cancelled out by Karim Benzema and Sergio Ramos converted a penalty kick in the 63rd minute, Real Madrid had taken a 2-1 lead. However, Costa scored his second goal of the game to tie the score.
Diego Costa’s close-range shot evens the score at 2-2.

Lopetegui was quoted by AS as saying in his post-match press conference: “We had good game phases but it was not enough.
“We must congratulate Atletico; I think their victory is well-earned.

“We are not pleased, and the fact that we have given up four goals is unacceptable. Definitely, this needs to be improved.
“We have to get better at everything; we don’t like to make mistakes, but we need to get better at everything, not just specific mistakes.

It is a depressing and frustrated feeling. However, being aware of our responsibilities compels us to get up, work on ourselves, and launch the league as we see fit.

Lopetegui’s first competitive match as manager was a loss.
Real Madrid kicks off their 2018–19 La Liga campaign on Sunday against Getafe. The team has lost both Cristiano Ronaldo, the club record goalscorer, and Lopetegui’s predecessor Zinedine Zidane.
They have won the Champions League in the last three and four of the previous five seasons, but they have only once won La Liga, coming in third the previous time around.
“We want to focus on the season without thinking about the last years and get the best out of the team,” Lopetegui said in response to a question concerning Real’s hunger after winning the Champions League so frequently.

“We’re excited about the league and want to think about it now. We want to get off to a strong start as the team hasn’t won many La Liga titles in recent years.
“Even after winning the Champions League, they still have the same hunger. To win this title, they were famished, eager, and thrilled.
Diego Simeone, the manager of Atletico Madrid, showed his happiness despite having to watch from the stands for the third game of a four-game touchline ban that was imposed upon him following his dismissal from the Europa League semifinal against Arsenal in the previous season.

During extra time, Saul Niguez gave Atleti their lead back.
“Happy, once again, we were able to respond very well in a final, especially in Europe,” the Argentine, who was also quoted by AS, stated.
Without a doubt, we must enjoy today. We will begin to consider the league starting tomorrow night; it will be a very challenging season.
Simeone’s team, who won the Europa League twice and finished second in La Liga last season, will visit Valencia on Monday.
“More titles this season?” he continued. I am Valencia, and everyone knows me.
