Liverpool handed Arsenal their third straight loss this evening, continuing their worrisome run of subpar performances.
Mikel Arteta and Martin Odegaard underlined the need to make a statement by winning against a Liverpool team that was weakened by the absence of Mohamed Salah and Wataru Endo after suffering defeats against Fulham and West Ham in their previous games.
Even though the Reds were still very good, Arsenal saw this as a great chance to advance in the storied competition.
Arsenal fans were crammed into the Emirates Stadium, desperate to see their team beat Liverpool.
Despite Arsenal’s superior performance in the first half and their numerous missed opportunities—including some excellent ones for Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka—the score was still 0-0 at the break.
After multiple Arsenal attacks that looked like goals, Liverpool held firm and took the lead thanks to a late own goal from Jakub Kiwior.
At that moment, the intensity of the game increased as Arsenal made a determined attempt to tie the score but ultimately exposed themselves defensively.
Luis Diaz gave Liverpool a late goal via a counterattack, essentially ending Arsenal’s chances of winning this year’s FA Cup after their opening game.
The supporters of Arsenal are confused about the unexpected loss to a weakened Liverpool team at home, as the current circumstances have thrown the team into a crisis.
Check out Joe Broadfoot’s thoughtful analysis of Arsenal’s 2023 season-ending losses to West Ham and Fulham in the latest podcast.
