The manager of Real Sociedad has shared details of his last discussion with Mikel Merino prior to the midfielder’s transfer to Arsenal.

Yesterday, the Gunners and the La Liga team agreed on a deal that may bring the Spanish international to north London for as much as £32.6 million, including add-ons.

Merino is rumoured to be heading to the English city today to finalise his medical clearance and sign a four-year contract that has an extension option through 2029.

Among the longest-running transfer sagas of the window thus far has been Arsenal’s pursuit of Merino, a member of Spain’s Euro 2024 winning squad.

But after six years with the club, the 28-year-old was eventually seen packing his things and bidding farewell to staff and colleagues in Sociedad.

Once Merino secured his transfer to the Premier League, Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil stated that he and Merino have no bitter feelings and wished him the best of luck.

“I thanked him,” I said. Alguacil remarked, “I am happy because as Real coach I want farewells like this,” as reported by the local newspaper El Diario Vasco.
