Despite rumors of a falling out with Erik ten Hag, Raphael Varane is no longer favored at Manchester United, but he is unwilling to leave during the January transfer window.

As long as he is wanted, Raphael Varane wants to stay at Manchester United past the January transfer window.

Varane joined from Real Madrid in the summer of 2021, but Erik ten Hag has chosen to go with other defensive options, so he has only started one of his team’s last 11 games. With Varane relegated to the bench, players like Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans, Luke Shaw, and Victor Lindelof have all played in the center of the field.

Despite rumors about his future circulating, the Frenchman does not intend to leave Old Trafford in the new year. According to the MEN, he has always desired to play for the Red Devils and will only think about quitting if it is announced that he is no longer needed.

In the past two months, Varane has made one start and four substitute appearances. He used to be a regular, but it seems like he’s fallen out of favor, which has led to rumors that he and Erik ten Hag have had disagreements.

Last month, the Dutch coach was adamant that Varane has no problems and that his lack of playing time is purely tactical. Without a doubt not, he replied. “As I previously stated, I selected these partnerships for tactical reasons. Harry and Jonny did well, in my opinion. As I mentioned last year, Rapha’s performances thrilled me because Harry didn’t play much. I’ve always been pleased with his work. However, there is internal rivalry and Harry is playing really well right now.”

Varane has primarily played as a substitute in recent weeks, and he has a challenging task ahead of him to regain his place in the first team. Having won the World Cup with France and several Champions League titles with Real Madrid, he was a regular in the past.

A Varane-Maguire combination may be feasible, but Ten Hag pointed out that it has drawbacks because their play is “not that fluid” because one of them plays on the left.

“There are moments in certain games where they (Maguire and Varane) can play together and they have already proven they can do it,” he stated. However, when one of them is positioned as a left center-back, the build-up is less fluid.

“Because, in my opinion, Licha, Luke Shaw, Jonny Evans, and Victor Lindelof are all clearly right-footed players, but they can also play very comfortably with their left and create the appropriate angles.” After that, you can build a stronger formation and begin playing.”
