De Ligt transferred to Manchester United this summer from Bayern Munich for a documented cost of £38.5 million ($50.5m), plus a further £5m ($6.5m) in supplementary payments. The Dutch defender has already made his debut for Erik ten Hag’s team during their Premier League opener victory against Fulham, where he entered the game as a substitute. Nevertheless, The Athletic has just disclosed several significant details regarding the departure of the centre-back from Bayern Munich.
According to the source, Vincent Kompany, the new manager of Bayern Munich, expressed a desire for De Ligt to remain at the Allianz Arena throughout the current summer period. According to reports, the Dutchman had a conversation with the Belgian coach on his position in the team of the Bavarians. Kompany reassured him that he is considered the top defence for this season. The ex-Burnley manager expressed a desire to retain De Ligt at the club, however, Bayern’s senior executives were not enthusiastic about keeping the 25-year-old player and opted to ahead with his sale.
According to The Athletic, De Ligt’s representatives believed that Bayern Munich were engaging in deceptive tactics during their negotiations on the future of the centre-back. The senior executives were determined to sell the Dutchman and did not approach the negotiations with the centre-back in a serious manner.
The Dutch defender was not included in the starting lineup for the match against Fulham last weekend due to his recent integration into Manchester United’s squad dynamics. Nevertheless, there is a possibility that he will be chosen to play with Lisandro Martinez in the central defence when the Red Devils face Brighton on Saturday, August 24.
