Mikel Arteta axed “embarrassing” Arsenal star after shameless brag to Brighton rival

As Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta has demonstrated time and time again that he will not put up with fools – just ask Matteo Guendouzi, a former star player for the Gunners.

Over the years, Brighton and Arsenal have had some incredible matches, with the Seagulls typically emerging victorious.

On Sunday afternoon, Brighton travels to the Emirates in the hopes of repeating their 3-0 victory from the previous season on the same field. They have, however, not only enjoyed success against the Gunners in the red half of north London; they have also enjoyed some significant victories at the Amex.

Arsenal’s second “Project Restart” match from 2020, which marked the return of Premier League football following a more than three-month suspension due to the coronavirus pandemic, sticks out as especially painful.

The Gunners traveled to the south coast with the intention of winning their next game after suffering a crushing loss to Manchester City. When Bernd Leno, the goalkeeper for Arsenal, was hurt by Neal Maupay at the end of the first half and had to be stretchered off, things started to go wrong.

Nicolas Pepe gave Arsenal the lead in the 68th minute, but Lewis Dunk tied the score less than ten minutes later. There was much worse in store for the visitors. After injuring Leno, Maupay—who the Gunners already saw as a villain—came up with a winning goal in the 95th minute to secure all three points.

Shortly after, the full-time whistle blew, drawing criticism from several irate Arsenal players for Maupay. Matteo Guendouzi was the most enraged of them all, as he pulled the striker to the ground by the throat.

That was not the end of it, though, as Guendouzi immediately marched back over to Maupay after he had stood up to boast about having a higher salary than the Brighton striker at the time. Ally McCoist, a frequent contributor on talkSPORT, called the Frenchman “embarrassing,” and it soon became clear that Maupay was actually earning roughly £10,000 more per week than the midfield player.

Although Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, is all for his players putting on a little fight, it’s thought that he was not amused by Guendouzi’s blatant insults directed at Maupay during full time. The youthful midfielder was soon barred by the Spaniard from Gunners practises, and he subsequently went on loan to Hertha BSC and Marseille.

Guendouzi signed a long-term contract with Marseille in the summer of 2022, leaving Arsenal, and has remained there ever since. Coincidentally, the now-famous away match against Brighton proved to be his final appearance in an Arsenal uniform, as Arteta was not amused by the outburst.

Even though Maupay and Guendouzi have both since left the relevant clubs, members of the current Arsenal crop should take note and avoid acting in such a manner when the Seagulls visit town on Sunday to avoid incurring Arteta’s wrath.
