It has been reported that Manchester United committed a similar “error” with another player’s contract to the one involving Raphael Varane.

Varane’s stay at Old Trafford looks to be in jeopardy after Erik ten Hag repeatedly left the France defender off the squad in recent weeks.

However, he has started the last two games for United, and on Sunday, he teamed up with Jonny Evans at center back to produce an excellent display in the 0-0 draw against Liverpool.

Varane is “hopeful,” per the Manchester Evening News, that United will activate the one-year contract extension that will keep him with the team through the summer of 2025.

In the event that United decides not to retain the defender, the Frenchman will be able to negotiate a pre-contract with European teams the following month. When The Athletic contacted United, they declined to comment on the circumstances.

According to the report, when Varane arrived at Old Trafford, United misrepresented that he had signed a four-year contract that would expire in June 2025. Although he signed for three years plus an additional year of option, several outlets reported that he had signed a four-year contract with a 12-month option.

Given that Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, and Victor Lindelof are all out with injuries, Evans and the four-time Champions League winner will be United’s main focus in the near future. But if necessary, Luke Shaw can play on the left side of central defense.

In the meantime, United announced that midfielder Nemanja Matic had re-signed a three-year contract in the summer of 2020, extending his stay at Old Trafford until 2023.

However, the Serbian’s contract expired in the summer of 2022, and he left the team on a free transfer. The MEN later revealed that the Serbian’s deal was actually two years with a 12-month option.

There have been parallels drawn between Varane’s deal and Matic’s unclear contract.

After that, Matic rejoined Jose Mourinho, his former manager at Chelsea and United, at Roma, where he made 35 Serie A appearances and assisted the Italian team in winning the Europa League the previous season.

This summer, the 35-year-old signed with Rennes of Ligue 1, where he has so far made 13 league appearances.
