Man United vs. Liverpool predicted starting lineup: Marcus Rashford up front, Kobbie Mainoo at the center
The physiotherapist’s room at Old Trafford was busier this week than it had been the previous one, as both Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw hobbled off the field against Bayern Munich in the middle of the week.
Although Maguire will not be playing in tomorrow’s Premier League game against Liverpool, manager Erik ten Hag does not believe the player will be out for a long time.
Marcus Rashford is back, but Anthony Martial is still out with the illness that kept him from playing on Tuesday.
Rashford is reportedly infected with the Norovirus.
Shaw also seems to have had hamstring issues, but he recovered quickly and is back in the game.
Since neither Ten Hag nor the club made any mention of Victor Lindelof during his press conference, it is currently unknown if he has fully recovered from the illness that has kept him out of the last two games. We will consider that he remains unavailable.
Lisandro Martinez is back on the field but will miss a few weeks of football competition due to the same ankle issue that kept him out of the last stretch of the previous season. This is his second surgery.
Tyrell Malacia has had a minor setback in his recovery, so he won’t be available until at least mid-January.
Given that United lost the corresponding match 7-0 the previous season, Ten Hag might choose Aaron Wan-Bissaka over Diogo Dalot for the right back position due to his defensive mindset.
It appears more likely that Jonny Evans will partner Rapha Varane at center back and Shaw will play left back if Lindelof is unable to play. Shaw’s stint at center back appears to have run its course.
Another possibility is Sergio Reguilon.
Ten Hag is anticipated to continue to have faith in Andre Onana in the goal.
Mason Mount may be ready to play again in midfield, but the bench is most likely the only practical option. Bruno Fernandes is suspended and both Casemiro and Christian Eriksen are out.
Once more, exercising caution, the most likely scenario is that Kobbie Mainoo replaces Bruno, with Sofyan Amrabat supporting the eighteen-year-old and Scott McTominay stepping up a bit into an eight-ten role. While some creativity is lost, midfield should gain a bit more of a defensive wall as a result.
Another option to replace Fernandes is Hannibal, but the hostile Anfield environment may not be the best fit for his inexperience and fiery temperament.
With Rasmus Hojlund appearing jaded and unconfident and with Martial out of the picture, Rashford might be asked to play center forward, with Alejandro Garnacho sticking on the left wing and Antony on the right.
In addition to giving Rashford the chance to really start his season against Liverpool, this would give Hojlund a chance to recover and benefit from new legs should he be brought on as a substitute in the second half.
If Amad Diallo does not play for the U21s today, he may return to the bench following a lengthy absence. While Jadon Sancho is still being banished by Ten Hag, Facu Pellistri is another possibility on the wings.
In light of everything, the following is our lineup prediction for tomorrow’s match:
