Speaking to the BBC prior to the match, Wayne Rooney spoke about what’s next for him and his desire to return to management: “Of course, that’s the aim. Manchester United, Everton, all these big jobs. You want to try and do it, but it’s a process, and you’ve got to go through those steps of obviously getting myself back on track and back into management, and make sure in the next 10 years I’m in a position where I can go into one of the top jobs.”

Nuno: ‘We all had the dream for the FA Cup’
More from Nuno Espirito Santo’s discussion with the BBC after the match: “We have to keep on going. We have to improve a lot of things. We played good today. We defended well. We were organised. We fought. Something that didn’t happen before. We have to be more clinical in front of the goal.
“I’m disappointed for the fans. We all had the dream of winning the FA Cup. Now it’s over. We’ll try again next time.”
He also addressed Forest, facing a potential points deduction in the relegation battle: “We are aware that things outside are happening. We’re still waiting for a decision. We can’t do anything about it. We have to work and put our energy into the next game against Liverpool.”

Nuno Espirito Santo spoke to the BBC after Forest’s loss: “(Disappointing) for all of us, for our fans, for us as a team. We played good. We had good situations, and we’re disappointed to lose at the end.
“Not too many differences. Both teams had chances, and both teams were organised. It was a good game.
“This was a competition, and we had expectations. Now is not the moment to regret it. The boys gave everything, and they played good football.
“They were checking a possible offside (by Varane) from the block (on Casemiro’s goal). It’s over. We had so many situations with Brentford and VAR last month. Let’s forget about it and focus on what we can control.

Ten Hag defends Fernandes
Erik ten Hag issued a staunch defence of Bruno Fernandes in his press conference tonight, saying he overcame a “serious injury” to play and that Nottingham Forest players targeted him.
“There were many fouls on him,” the manager said. “You see, when he is getting the ball, they are really tight on him.”
Ten Hag also defended his captain against online detractors.
“I see social media criticizing him. It is pathetic. He has a very high pain threshold. Last year, he did something similar against the Spurs, and I think it was in the semi-final. It shows his leadership.”

Felipe lucky to avoid red card

Several other United supporters have taken to our discussion page to express their confusion as to how Felipe avoided a red card for grabbing Bruno Fernandes’ throat…
Cameron B: Wild that Felipe didn’t see red for that throat grab and squeeze. Much more malicious than Casemiro’s at Palace last year.
Aa P: Casemiro would’ve got 2 reds for that.
Nduka A: I miss the days when Fergie would follow the ref down the tunnel. Apparently grabbing people’s necks is fine as long as it’s not Casemiro.

United supporter: ‘Absolutely dire’
Despite advancing to the quarter-finals, several Manchester United supporters on our discussion page were less than impressed with their side’s performance today…
Stuart L: Standard (these days) post-match sentiment: that was absolutely dire. Just counting down the games to the summer holiday, as if I’m back at school and these matches are geography lessons. Maybe next year will be better. And if not, the one after. And if not, then eventually I’ll just die and it doesn’t matter.
Kevin F: My god that was **AWFUL** No other words…

Ten Hag: We have to show that every game
Erik ten Hag also spoke to the BBC after his side’s crucial win: “It’s the best time to score at the end. On Saturday we felt a defeat in stoppage time.
“We scored in the right moment. In the second half after five or six minutes we found the game. Then we were continually in their half and took control of the game. Before that we had to make some changes. The routines fell away.
“We had chances but we allowed them to create some chances. We should avoid that.
“Fantastic games coming up. This team, what they showed today, that’s great. They have to show it every game. I’ve seen it the last couple of months, not on Saturday. We found the way to win.
“We were consistent. We lost one time in 2024. We are consistent. It’s not so easy when you have the whole back line out and we have to shuffle and play players in different positions. I’m very proud we did it.”

Victor Lindelof spoke to the BBC after Manchester United’s win: “We are very happy. We knew it was going to be a tough game. Always nice to score a late goal and go into the next round.
“Casemiro is very good at the timing of everything. He’s a clever player. He’s done that a couple of times in his career. It was a perfect ball from Bruno Fernandes and a perfect execution from Casemiro.
“We have a nice couple of games coming up. We have to focus one game at a time.”

Forest had chances to win

Nottingham Forest actually played well in spells tonight. They created some decent opportunities. They looked lively. They might have won on another day… but Casemiro’s glancing header was enough to be the difference.
Genuinely mixed feelings at the final whistle. The main one is probably frustration. United produced the one moment of quality in front of goal when it mattered. Turner and Onana both made big saves in this game.
Forest were not as bright in the second half as they had been in the first. It was an evenly contested game. But there were spells where you thought they might just beat United here for the second time in recent months.
But it was not to be.

Felipe takes exception to something Fernandes has done and grabs him around the throat. He’s not the first player to do so, but at this moment in the match he’s only playing into United’s hands.
