As sporting director, Liverpool hasn’t really replaced the legendary Michael Edwards yet.
Before departing the team in 2022, Edwards worked there for more than ten years and was widely recognized as the driving force behind some of Liverpool’s most successful recent acquisitions. The Reds are looking for a new man to take over for him after he left two years ago.
Edwards hardly ever seemed to miss a transfer window for Liverpool while he was in charge. Consequently, Reds great Jamie Carragher revealed to the Stick To Football podcast that he once visited the analyst to find out why everyone was so excited.
“People discuss Liverpool’s hiring practices, and Michael Edwards is well-known for his work with Jurgen Klopp and other club personnel,” Carragher claims. Years later, I went to see him again because I needed some additional information. It wasn’t my intention to speak up at the time. I had anticipated learning a great deal about the number of scouts they have, how they observe them, and how they perceive various things.
“He just mentioned that our relationships with agents are the most important factor in obtaining the players we desire. I had higher expectations! However, all he was really saying was that it’s huge.
“I’m not saying it’s just about the money, but you see about agent fees every year. He was talking about having good relationships with their agents.”
Edwards divulges Red’s backstory
As is customary with the Liverpool legend, Carragher offers some truly fascinating insights.
The revelation that Edwards attributes much of his success at Anfield to his connections with agents comes as a bit of a surprise. There always seemed to be so much more to it than that, though. However, this shouldn’t come as a huge surprise as Carra has already brought up this subject.
ADDITIONAL LIVERPOOL STORES
Naturally, this does not imply that Liverpool hired people at a slow pace. They also used a sophisticated data collection model to find the most suitable candidate for Jurgen Klopp’s system.
When it came to football analytics, Edwards was among the pioneers, as evidenced by the Reds’ hiring practices over the years.

However, you can’t just rely on data analysis to attract the necessary players. Relationships are always going to be important in business.
Nowadays, agents have a lot of influence over players, so it makes sense to be on good terms with them.
Which club do you think an agent would recommend a client join if they are giving them signing advice and they have a good relationship with one club but a bad or neutral relationship with the other?
It frequently has the power to decide whether a player signs or not. Why would you allow something like that to prevent you from completing tasks once you’ve obtained all the hard data and focused your scouting? This is simply astute work from an astute man. Edwards is sorely missed.
