Gary Lineker, the host of Match of the Day, wrote a heartfelt ode to Ian Wright following the news that the pundit would be departing the program at the conclusion of this season.

Following Ian Wright’s announcement that he would be leaving Match of the Day at the end of the current season, Gary Lineker has paid tribute to the pundit.

Wright, 60, has spent 27 years connected to the flagship show and has had two distinct stints as a pundit. After first leaving the show in 2008, he made a comeback in 2015.

Since 1999, Lineker has hosted the highlights program. When he found out that one of the program’s most well-liked pundits would be leaving, he took to social media.

“Working with you, Ian, has been an absolute pleasure and privilege,” he remarked. One of the world’s most beloved individuals. Goodbye, my friend.”

In a statement released on Sunday, Wright himself announced his departure: “I’ll be stepping back from BBC MOTD at the end of this season, after my debut show whilst still a player in 1997 and many more memorable years.”

“I feel very privileged to have had such an incredible run on the most iconic football show in the world.”

He went on, “Everyone who is familiar with my background understands the significance the show has had for me since I was a young child. My ultimate goal is MOTD. I said to [presenter] Des Lynam on my very first show that this was “my Graceland.” I’ll be watching it forever, and it will always be my Graceland.

“I’m taking a step back, having created many wonderful memories and wonderful friends. I’m eager to cover what should be an incredible title race during my final months on the show.”

Head of BBC TV Sport Philip Bernie also offered his thoughts on the story. Ian has been a fantastic star player on MOTD since his debut more than 20 years ago, the speaker stated. Everyone who has watched him has been greatly amused and educated by his warmth, wit, and insight.

“We will miss his unique style and presence when he goes at the end of this season, but we will be sure to give him the send-off he deserves.”
