DONE DEAL: Arsenal finally complete perfect midfield with Martin Zubimendi transfer on £12m condition
Current transfer rumors involving Arsenal, possibly putting Emile Smith Rowe’s future at risk and offering a fantastic opportunity to sign Martin Zubimendi
Before adding Martin Zubimendi to his ideal Arsenal midfield, Mikel Arteta must make one important choice. At Emirates Stadium, the midfielder for Real Sociedad is well-liked by football fans.London claiming that even before the January transfer window, the Gunners had kept tabs on him.
Barcelona expressed interest in the Spain international this past summer, but he decided to commit to Sociedad for the 2023–2024 campaign. Sociedad’s success in securing a spot in the Champions League knockout stages has reduced the likelihood of him leaving, even with a £52 million release clause in his contract that appears realistic.
Although football.london understands a transfer being completed in January is unlikely at this stage, interest from North London has not diminished. In order to provide some much-needed depth to the midfield, Declan Rice and Kai Havertz were both signed in the summer. Zubimendi is yet another option that is being considered to address the midfield’s long-term future for the team.
Although Zubimendi’s unwillingness to move on continues to be a barrier, Arsenal thinks they can get past it; the only issue is raising the money needed to finish the transfer. There isn’t much money available to Arteta and Edu if they want to continue adhering to FFP rules and regulations because Arsenal spent almost £200 million on the summer acquisitions of Rice, Havertz, and Jurrien Timber.
Reward money for this season’s accomplishments will help, but selling players—ideally homegrown ones—is the only practical way to raise money quickly. Given the direction his Arsenal career is taking, selling Emile Smith Rowe could yield pure profit from the sale of an academy star, which would be extremely beneficial.
It’s not completely out of the question that the England international will move on in January; Aston Villa, Newcastle, and even Chelsea have all been linked to him. The 23-year-old is currently valued at £12.8 million, according to CIES Football Observatories, but it is definitely possible to get more for his services should interest arise.
Even if someone like Smith Rowe leaves in January, Zubimendi might not sign, but a summer switch is definitely possible given that most clubs’ major business is anticipated to be finished by then. With the exception of two La Liga games, Zubimendi has played 90 minutes in each of Sociedad’s games this season, demonstrating his value as the team’s mainstay under Imanol Alguacil.
