During their Premier League match against Liverpool, Jamie Carragher made fun of Sofyan Amrabat, a midfield player for Manchester United, which led to criticism for the Morocco international.

During Sofyan Amrabat’s poor performance at Anfield, Jamie Carragher brutally said that the Manchester United star “can’t run.”

On loan from Fiorentina, Amrabat was chosen to start in Erik ten Hag’s ragged United team for the difficult trip to face bitter rivals Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday. In the 35th minute, Ten Hag’s use of Amrabat—who was chasing shadows against Liverpool’s midfield—was called into question by Carragher after the Morocco international received a yellow card.

After being booked, a puzzled Carragher said during a Sky Sports commentary, “I don’t understand why they’re using a man-to-man system.” Amrabat is unable to run.”

Since joining United on the day of the September transfer deadline, Amrabat’s lack of speed has been heavily criticized. During the summer, the 27-year-old was particularly linked to moves to other European powerhouses like Barcelona and Liverpool. His calm and diligent performances for surprise team Morocco at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar catapulted him to stardom, but injuries in the midfield prevented United from moving forward until the last days of the summer transfer window.

Amrabat has started every game for Ten Hag since teammate Casemiro’s three-month absence in October, so his inclusion on the team sheet at Anfield came as no surprise. When paired with 18-year-old academy prospect Kobbie Mainoo, who was also booked in the first half, the loanee was unable to stop Liverpool’s midfield, as players like Dominik Szoboszlai were able to force their way through.

However, the visitors were weathering the storm, and at halftime the score was 0-0. Carragher’s evaluation of Amrabat’s performance went viral on social media, with one fan writing: “Carragher is killing me straight up saying Amrabat can’t run.”

Someone else made the harsh statement, “Amrabat is looking Sunday league level here.” Then a third admirer conceded: “In January, I would send Amrabat back to Fiorentina.” Having trouble identifying his true strengths other than receiving unnecessary yellow cards.”

A Liverpool fan expressed relief that the Moroccan would not be signed by the team. “I’m so glad we didn’t sign Amrabat in the end,” they replied.

Carragher’s assessment of Amrabat was met with criticism from some fans, who stated: “Jamie Carragher casually saying Sofyan Amrabat can’t run like he didn’t dominate in the World Cup.”
