“I was shocked Chelsea let him go” – Pedro can’t believe Chelsea sold £30m player after Man city defeat

Pedro expressed his disbelief at Chelsea letting go of the £30 million player following Man City’s defeat.

Former Chelsea attacker Pedro Rodríguez has been reacting to the team’s defeat by Manchester City over the weekend.

Chelsea fell 2-0 at home as goals from Erling Haaland and former Blues midfielder Mateo Kovacic gave the visitors the lead.

Enzo Maresca’s team will be hoping to win and get back on track against Servette on Thursday in the opening leg of their Conference League play-off tie.

After Chelsea’s defeat to City, Maresca was not happy with the Chelsea supporters. He will be looking for a more positive atmosphere when Chelsea returns to Stamford Bridge later this week.

Last summer, Chelsea paid £25 million to City for Kovacic’s original transfer. Pedro is now questioning the transfer again after being surprised by it.

The former Chelsea attacker stated, “What I love about Kovacic, and I was surprised that Chelsea let him go, is that he’s one of the best midfielders at running with the ball as well,” after selecting Kovacic for his team of the week. You can tell how at ease he is playing by watching him.

“When he drops his shoulder and dribbles past players, he has that acceleration.” I witnessed it during the preseason when he assisted Jack Grealish in scoring. In the preseason, he teed the ball for Grealish to finish after running the entire length of the pitch with it.

And those Chelsea midfielders were thinking, “Oh, midfielders can do that?” yesterday [Sunday]. That is not what [Moises] Caicedo, [Romeo] Lavia, and [Enzo] Fernandez do. One of the midfielders who will commit to you, take you on, and have a goal in him is Kovacic.

Jose Mourinho, the former manager of Chelsea, was rumoured to be interested in luring Kovacic to Fenerbahce. However, given how admirably he filled in for Rodri on Sunday, it seems doubtful that City will allow him to leave, particularly given how late the transfer window is.

Mateo Kovacic should have been sold by Chelsea to Man City.

With only a year remaining on his deal, Chelsea was ultimately likely forced to sell Kovacic to City.

That being said, maybe they need to have made a stronger effort to retain the 30-year-old at the team. One of the greatest midfielders in the world at carrying the ball, Kovacic is an extremely seasoned player—something that the current Chelsea team lacks.

The Croatian has performed in the 85th percentile among midfielders in terms of progressive carries over the past 12 months, according to FBref.

Lavia, Caicedo, and Fernandez are players for Chelsea. Lavia made a great impression against Man City. However, by allowing him to transfer to the Etihad last summer, Kovacic has just showed his old team that they could have made a mistake.
