According to recent reports, the Premier League and FA are still looking into Chelsea for possible past violations of Financial Fair Play regulations. It happens at a time when the upper division has been heavily enforcing the new sustainability and profit regulations over the past year, bringing them to light.

In the modern era, Manchester City was the first team to face charges after a five-year investigation that yielded 115 alleged violations. The city says it will fight these allegations, and it will likely take some time for this case to be overseen in the future by an impartial panel.

With Arsenal and Liverpool as their current title rivals this season, the Champions’ opponents will be closely following the conclusion of that case. This is due to the fact that the penalties for any found violations are still unknown, though one previous case may have demonstrated how severe they could be.

This is the situation involving Everton, whose claims of financial violations were made public a month after those of City, and whose panel hearing took place in October. Even though there were multiple charges to consider, it was easier to come to a conclusion on because there were fewer charges.

The independent panel did discover that the Toffees spent almost £20 million more than the permitted losses of £105 million over any three-year period. They were consequently given a ten-point deduction, which sent them into a relegation battle; however, the decision is still up for appeal.

Though it’s unclear exactly what will come out of these circumstances, it seems like the Premier League has some additional concerns. Journalist David Ornstein reports that Chelsea and old financial records are the subject of ongoing investigations.

He commented on NBC: “They’ve [Chelsea] still got a financial fair play issue hanging over them in the Premier League and FA investigating potential historic breaches under the Roman Abramovich era but the current ownership have held their hands up, they are complying with that process, we’ve got no updates just yet.”
