Erik ten Hag’s team could have had more ease if Bruno Fernandes had scored from the penalty spot, but Man United had to work harder for their 2-1 victory.

In their Premier League match at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, Manchester United overcame Chelsea 2-1 after a dismal week.

Erik ten Hag’s team scored just before the half through a long-range effort from Scott McTominay that went past Robert Sanchez and a close-range header that found its way into the net. Cole Palmer, a former Manchester City academy graduate, defeated Andre Onana in the interim, but United earned their victory.

With the win, United can be confident that they are back on track and move up to sixth place in the standings for the evening. They trail Manchester City by just three points and are tied with Tottenham in fifth place in terms of points.

Two celebrities with a stake in the outcome of the game, Jeremy Clarkson and Caleb Cooper, stars of the Amazon Prime Video series “Clarkson’s Farm,” were present at Old Trafford on Wednesday night. Since Cooper had never seen his beloved United play live at Old Trafford, he was eager to watch Clarkson, a lifelong Chelsea fan.

The turf was in perfect condition, suggesting that Cooper, who had actually been at Old Trafford a few days earlier to assist the ground crew in preparing the pitch, worked his magic.

Potential United captain

After the game, the home crowd, who had once again been outstanding, showered the players with applause as they emerged from the Old Trafford tunnel. Every United player was joined by a young mascot, as is customary these days, and one of them made a good impression on his heroes.

Diogo Dalot grabbed the opportunity to whip up some claps and a little shouting from his teammates as the Premier League anthem was playing while the players were lining up. The boy next to Onana turned around at that moment and tried his hardest to do the same.

Standing in front of the United goalkeeper, that was undoubtedly a future leader. His team’s winning rally cry helped them get off to a fantastic start and take the lead right away.

Antony is willing to do it

United was awarded a penalty after nine minutes, which should have resulted in an early goal after such a strong start. It wasn’t immediately apparent that Enzo Fernandez had stamped on Antony’s foot, but upon referee Chris Kavanagh’s removal from the game, it became evident.

Rasmus Hojlund powerfully struck the crossbar with his attempt after Bruno Fernandes’s attempt to hop his way to a successful penalty was saved by Sanchez. After being left out of the Saturday’s loss at Newcastle, Antony was determined to make a statement, and the Brazilian was not going to back down.

He immediately responded by rallying the supporters behind the goal and advising teammate Fernandes to put the miss behind him.

Shaw was lucky.

Luke Shaw received a soft early booking for kicking the ball away after fouling, but he could be forgiven for forgetting how strict the referees have been this season regarding minor disobedience. The United player handled the quick Raheem Sterling with ease even though it was unnecessary and put him in danger.

Yet Shaw might have received a second yellow card for an equally petty gesture, softly kicking the ball away after giving up a careless throw-in. Although the players at Chelsea didn’t exactly cry out in the same way, Pochettino did have a private discussion with the fourth official.

Anger at Hojlund

With every Premier League match, 20-year-old Hojlund becomes more and more eager to make his debut, and on Wednesday, he continued his goalless streak. It became evident against Chelsea that he was frustrated having played over 700 minutes of league football without scoring a goal.

Alejandro Garnacho was the target of Hojlund’s ire halfway through the second half, as he appeared to be just inches away from several opportunities. While working space on the left, the Argentinean’s cross was excessively strong and lofty.

After yet another opportunity gone wrong, the United striker expressed his frustration and made it clear that he wanted the ball to be on the ground. A short while later, he was replaced by Marcus Rashford.
