In light of rumors that former captain Jordan Henderson may leave Saudi Arabia this month to join Chelsea during the January transfer window, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has talked about the possibility. The England international played a significant role in the success that they shared at Anfield under their previous manager.

During his time with the Reds, Henderson won the European Super Cup, the Premier League, the FA Cup, two EFL Cups, the Champions League, and the Club World Cup. But following a largely underwhelming Premier League season, change was in the air in Merseyside during the summer.

Following his team’s failure to qualify for the Champions League, Klopp made changes and overhauled his roster to have fresh players prepared to contend once more. It also meant a few significant departures, one of which was Henderson, who moved on to play in the Saudi Pro League with Al Ettifaq.

There were some questions about the switch, particularly in light of Saudi Arabia’s recent human rights record, which Henderson’s position as an ambassador for Rainbow Laces only served to highlight. The captain of Liverpool was vocal in supporting causes related to the LGBTQ+ community, which some people felt went against his choice to relocate to Saudi Arabia.

“I can appreciate how frustrating it is. I can see why you’re angry. “I understand the backlash,” Henderson said in September to the Athletic. “About that, all I can say is that I’m sorry they feel that way. I never, ever intended to cause harm to anyone. My goal has always been to support communities and causes that I believe have asked for my assistance.

When I was making the decision, I tried to approach it from the perspective that, if I chose not to go, we could all stick our heads in the sand and criticize other people’s cultures and nations from a distance. However, nothing will occur after that. There won’t be any changes.”

But by the time the January transfer window rolls around, perhaps things have changed a little bit. According to recent reports, Henderson wants to leave in the next few weeks. There have been some connections regarding a potential move to Stamford Bridge, which might cause controversy.

After his team’s FA Cup victory over Arsenal on Sunday, Klopp was questioned about it. He received a snide response. He responded: “Did Hendo [Henderson] have a press conference and say that [he wanted to leave Saudi Arabia]?”

Though it’s unclear if the player himself desires it or not, it could present the Blues with an opportunity to add some much-needed experience to the team.
