Utd receive ‘£40m approach’ for Mason Greenwood but Sir Jim Ratcliffe has other plans
Manchester United reportedly aren’t ready to sell Mason Greenwood just yet amid Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s arrival.
On Christmas Eve, United announced that Ratcliffe had agreed a £1.3billion deal to buy a 25 per cent stake in the club.
The INEOS founder must wait up to six weeks for the Premier League to ratify the agreement, but he must authorise any football decisions before officially entering power.
Greenwood’s future will be among Ratcliffe’s most important early decisions as he gets back up to speed on loan at Getafe.
And he seemingly wants more time to deliberate on how to handle the 22-year-old forward after the dramatic summer U-turn over his reintegration at Old Trafford.
According to The Sun, Getafe are so keen to beat the ever-increasing interest in Greenwood’s signature that they have informed United they are keen to complete a £40million deal in January.
AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid are said to be circling the former Red Devils No 11 amid his impressive exploits in Spain.
Getafe ‘want to sign Mason Greenwood for £40m’.
The report adds that United want to keep Greenwood’s move a loan for now, potentially hoping he can continue to draw interest and restore his value.
Greenwood had spent 18 months away from action after his January 2022 arrest. He was later charged with attempted rape, assault and controlling coercive behaviour – all of which he denied.
In February this year, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges after the withdrawal of key witnesses, allowing him to continue his career.
But internal and external backlash prompted now-departed chief executive Richard Arnold to go back on his plans to sanction Greenwood’s return, leading to his deadline-day move to Getafe.
Greenwood has made headlines in Spain, registering five goals and four assists in his first 15 appearances.
United declared on Christmas Eve that Ratcliffe had reached an agreement to purchase a 25% share in the team for £1.3 billion.
The Premier League must ratify the agreement before the founder of INEOS can take office, and he must first approve all football-related decisions. This could take up to six weeks.
As Ratcliffe gets back up to speed on loan at Getafe, one of his most crucial early decisions will be regarding Greenwood’s future.
Additionally, it appears that he needs more time to consider his options for dealing with the 22-year-old forward in light of his shocking summertime U-turn regarding his Old Trafford reintegration.
The Sun claims that Getafe has told United they are eager to finalize a £40 million deal in January in order to elude the growing interest in signing Greenwood.
The former Red Devils No. 11 is reportedly being pursued by AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, and Real Madrid due to his outstanding performances in Spain.
Mason Greenwood is wanted by Getafe for £40 million.
According to the report, Greenwood’s move is still being treated as a loan by United, possibly in the hopes that he will continue to attract attention and increase in value.

Following his arrest in January 2022, Greenwood had been out of commission for eighteen months. Later on, he was accused of assault, attempted rape, and controlling coercive behavior, all of which he refuted.
Following the withdrawal of important witnesses, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges in February of this year, allowing him to pursue his career.
However, the now-departed chief executive Richard Arnold reversed his plans to approve Greenwood’s return due to internal and external backlash, which resulted in his move to Getafe on deadline day.
In his first 15 appearances, Greenwood has five goals and four assists, making headlines in Spain.
