Detroit Lions Re-Sign Veteran Edge Rusher Za’Darius Smith, Who Has Tallied 69 Career Sacks

The Detroit Lions continue to build on their aggressive offseason by re-signing veteran edge rusher Za’Darius Smith, a move that adds proven firepower to their already formidable defense. Smith, who boasts 69 career sacks, returns to Detroit with the goal of helping the team make a deeper playoff push in the upcoming season.

At 32, Smith brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and relentless pass-rushing ability. Known for his versatility and explosiveness off the edge, he’s been a consistent disruptor in the backfield throughout his NFL career. Originally drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2015, Smith later became a two-time Pro Bowler with the Green Bay Packers before making stops in Minnesota and Cleveland. Now, he’s back in Honolulu blue and silver.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell expressed his excitement about the deal: “Za’Darius brings a level of intensity and professionalism that we want in our locker room. He’s a tone-setter. Having him back adds another layer to our defense that we’re excited about.”

The Lions’ defensive unit made strides in 2024, but their pass rush occasionally lacked consistency. With Aidan Hutchinson anchoring one side, the return of Smith gives Detroit a powerful one-two punch on the edges. His veteran presence is also expected to be invaluable to the younger players on the roster.

Smith’s re-signing signals Detroit’s intent to compete for more than just division titles. The team is clearly in win-now mode, and bringing back a player with Smith’s résumé reinforces that message.

Fans have already shown support across social media, welcoming the veteran back to the Motor City. With Smith’s return, the Lions’ defense looks even more dangerous heading into the 2025 season.

Could this be the final piece for Detroit’s Super Bowl puzzle?
