U.S. Soccer reportedly intervening with Chelsea to expedite Mauricio Pochettino’s USMNT hiring before September friendlies
According to reports, U.S. Soccer is intervening to collaborate with Chelsea in order to expedite the arrival of Pochettino as the head coach of the U.S. men’s national team.
The United States Soccer Federation (USSF) is apparently collaborating with Chelsea Football Club.
Pochettino is still due money by the Blues. The US Men’s National Team will be playing against New Zealand and Canada in September.
It has been claimed that the US Men’s National Team (USMNT) is likely to hire Mauricio Pochettino as their head coach. However, the process has been delayed due to contractual issues between Pochettino and Chelsea, the English football club. Pochettino had a biennial agreement with the Blues and is still owed funds in connection with his departure earlier this year.
Reports suggest that U.S. Soccer might expedite the process by assuming the financial responsibility of Pochettino’s contract, while Chelsea compensates for the remaining amount owed to him from his tenure at Stamford Bridge. According to FOX Sports, U.S. Soccer CEO JT Batson and the federation’s legal team have intervened to collaborate with Chelsea and Pochettino in order to expedite the process and complete the hiring.
U.S. Soccer is highly motivated to promptly resolve the employment of Pochettino, especially considering the upcoming September friendly. FOX reports that U.S. Soccer is aiming to present Pochettino to the national media in New York as soon as this week.
The board of directors of U.S. Soccer is scheduled to convene in Atlanta on Friday. If a contract has been reached by that time, the board will have the authority to formally approve the details of the agreement.
If Pochettino is absent, Mikey Varas, the former U.S. U20 coach, would assume the role of temporary head coach for the two September friendlies. According to some sources, Varas may assume control even if Pochettino is there at that moment. However, FOX has also stated that Pochettino might be present for the friendly matches provided the contract is completed on schedule.
The United States will compete against Canada on September 7th in Kansas City, followed by a match against New Zealand in Cincinnati on September 10th.
