Thierry Henry names one thing Darwin Nunez did ‘so well’ in build up to Nottingham Forest winner
Darwin Nunez scored a header in his third consecutive Premier League game on Saturday, securing a victory for Liverpool over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground in the 99th minute.
Following his involvement in recent matches against Burnley and Brentford, Nunez was absent from the encounter against Luton Town due to injury.
Last Saturday, the Uruguayan player was fit enough to be a substitute and was called in by manager Jurgen Klopp around the hour mark. Once again, he had a significant influence on the outcome of the game for Liverpool in the current season’s title battle.
Nunez has scored 10 goals in the Premier League this season and a total of 14 goals overall. He has been a crucial asset for the Reds in attack throughout their struggle with a persistent injury crisis.
Nunez scored a last-minute winning goal from an Alexis MacAllister pass on Saturday, earning the Reds three points and extending their lead over Manchester City and Arsenal in the title battle.
Thierry Henry, a legendary figure in the Premier League, commended the 24-year-old for seizing his opportunity effectively.
Henry, acting as a pundit on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, highlighted that the forward capitalized on Forest’s defense’s weak positioning and accurately anticipated Mac Allister’s intentions.
Henry praised Nunez for quickly returning to an onside position after Mac Allister’s delivery.
He positions his body with the intention of creating a scoring opportunity. For what reason? Mac Allister indicated that he would cross the ball by looking while turning, rather than by telepathy.
At that moment, the center-backs were advancing when they should have been on their standing legs to jump as high as possible and clear the ball during a cross, but they were unable to do so effectively.
“He is able to attack the ball.” He is the only individual, except for Van Dijk, who remains in that position consistently. As a coach, I would ask a Nottingham Forest defender, “Are you not aware that Mac Allister has possession of the ball?”
“He gazed, pivoted, and traversed, while you continued to exit.” Nunez would not have been offside since Van Dijk was engaged in a duel with a Forest player at the back.
