Cody Gakpo, the winger for Liverpool, is obviously a huge fan of Jurgen Klopp’s, but he didn’t exactly shine last night against the Republic of Ireland for the Netherlands.

Wout Weghorst’s early goal was enough to book the Netherlands’ place in the Euros for next summer, so the attacker was underwhelming in the 1-0 victory over the Irish.

Although Ronal Koeman’s team had a great night, Gakpo had a forgettable one and was heavily criticized by the Dutch media for his lack of impact.

“Disappointing” Gakpo might put Klopp and Liverpool in trouble.

Gakpo was clearly not at his best in last night’s match against Ireland, as Voetbal Primeur described it and Football Oranje gave him a 5.5 rating.

And Klopp may have some issues at Liverpool as a result of this performance, particularly in the lead-up to the massive Premier League match against Manchester City the following weekend.

With Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, and Mohamed Salah all playing brilliantly for their countries this month, Gakpo may be benched as the match at the Etihad Stadium next week approaches.

Furthermore, Gakpo will now likely start against City on Saturday as a substitute after his performance last night gave Klopp little to work with when making his starting lineup.

Gakpo needs a comeback performance in order to thrive once more.

It’s natural to assume that Gakpo will be fired up to take on the European minnows, who made headlines this weekend with their 14-0 loss to France, especially since Gibraltar is the Netherlands’ next opponent.

In fact, if Koeman starts Gakpo on Tuesday night, the winger can make quite the statement. He is undoubtedly eager to get back on the scoresheet for his country.

And Gibraltar is the ideal opponent; the £43 million Liverpool winger will probably already be looking forward to this match as a major opportunity to gain confidence.
