11 HOURS AGO Chido Obi-Martin, the internet sensation, already has his future secured by Arsenal.
The 15-year-old made headlines over the weekend when Arsenal’s Under-16 team defeated Liverpool 14-3 with 10 goals from him.
Before his incredible performance on Saturday, the striker was predicted to go far, and it’s believed that he and Arsenal agreed on scholarship terms last year.
Obi-Martin, who turns 17 in November of next year, will be a member of the scholars for the 2024–25 season and will be eligible to sign his first professional contract.
For clubs, tying players to scholarship terms is essential because, before then, they can move for compensation.
In order to agree on scholarship terms, Arsenal had to fight hard this summer to keep striker Ethan Nwaneri, eventually stifling interest from Chelsea and Manchester City.
Despite only being 15 years old, Obi-Martin has already played for Arsenal’s U21 team and led the U18s to a hat-trick against Southampton in September.
The striker, who is already over 6 feet tall, is being pushed to play with older age groups in part because of his size and pace, which have drawn attention.
Due to the international break and the ongoing U17 World Cup, there weren’t as many academy games over the weekend as usual. As a result, Obi-Martin played for Arsenal’s U16s and became well-known on social media after scoring ten goals.
