Sir  Jim Ratcliffes  investment was made just over a year after Cristiano Ronaldo criticized the team in an interview with Piers Morgan. At the time of the interview in November 2022, Ronaldo had a contract with Old Trafford, but he would soon sign a mutual departure agreement to join Al Nassr, a Saudi Pro League team.

Ronaldo criticized the club’s administrative practices in part of the interview, citing Carrington as the team’s training facility. In comparison to his time working with Sir Alex Ferguson, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner listed a number of aspects of the club that did not live up to his expectations. These included the way the team trained and kept themselves fit, as well as the organizational structure surrounding manager Erik ten Hag.

“I was taken aback,” Ronaldo stated during a November 2018 interview. “I believed that when I signed, things would go as Manchester United planned, with the signing of [Jadon] Sancho, [Raphael] Varane, and me.”
