Winter transfer window: Arsenal is thinking about bringing in a full-back. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano exclusively updates GIVEMESPORT from the Emirates Stadium.

In an effort to win the North London team its first Premier League championship since 2004, Mikel Arteta will look to bolster his Gunners roster before the end of the transfer window.

Owing to injuries and the circumstances surrounding international tournaments, the runners-up in the 2022–2023 Premier League will feel undersized at full back. They might use a portion of their transfer budget to bolster this section of the field. Arsenal is unlikely to have a cash infusion this month because they have already made significant purchases during the 2023 summer transfer window.

Arsenal’s full-back position is shallow.
The past few weeks at the Emirates Stadium have been tough for Arsenal. After suffering heartbreaking losses to Fulham and West Ham United in recent weeks, Arteta’s team has only won once in their previous seven games, which came in the Gunners’ 2-0 Premier League triumph over Brighton & Hove Albion in December 2023. Arsenal has been charged with having trouble scoring goals, as Gabriel Jesus has not been scoring at a high enough level and Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli appear to have run out of steam.

The 13-time English champions must, however, strengthen in other areas of the field, as the right- and left-back positions are starting to show weaknesses. At the Emirates Stadium, Arteta’s only first-team option on the right side of defense is now center-back turned full-back Ben White, with Cedric Soares hardly getting a look in.

Takehiro Tomiyasu might not be available until February because he traveled to Qatar to represent Japan in the Asia Cup. Arrived in the summer of 2023, Jurrien Timber can also play at right-back, but it is unlikely that he will play again in 2023–24 after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Nottingham Forest on the opening weekend of the season in August of last year.

Oleksandr Zinchenko, meanwhile, might be the only starting left back for Arsenal following the approval of Kieran Tierney’s loan move to Real Sociedad in the summer transfer window of 2023. It follows that the Gunners are rumored to be searching the market for full-back options prior to the winter transfer window’s February 1st deadline in 2024.

In encouraging news, Romano also revealed to GIVEMESPORT on January 10 that Arsenal is getting closer to securing Tomiyasu’s future as he prepares to sign a contract extension. The 25-year-old’s current contract expires in the summer of 2025, so the Gunners will be eager to negotiate new terms to avoid having to sell the adaptable defender during the following 18 months.

Fabrizio Romano: “Names are being considered” for Arsenal’s full-back positions
According to Romano, Arsenal is considering full-back options and is looking at names on the market. The Italian journalist has stated that it’s “important to see what happens with the outgoings” and that the Gunners won’t be spending a lot of money on the position. When asked if Arsenal wanted to bolster their full-back position this winter, Romano responded to GIVEMESPORT as follows:

They are considering their options for that role. Thus, names are being considered as Arsenal looks at full-backs. I doubt Arsenal would spend a lot of money there because some are just too costly. Perhaps they are searching for a job opportunity in that role. That’s the current concept. It will also be crucial to observe the outcome regarding the outgoings.

News about transfers involving Arsenal, including links to Jeremie Frimpong
It’s doubtful that Arsenal will have the money to make a big signing in the winter transfer window after spending more than £200 million in the summer transfer window of 2023. But in an attempt to position themselves to challenge for the Premier League title, Arteta’s team has been linked to moves for some of Europe’s most sought-after players.

Football Insider reports that Liverpool has set their sights on signing right-back Jeremie Frimpong of Bayer Leverkusen, while Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Manchester United are also showing interest. With a £35 million release clause, the 23-year-old might become available later in 2024, providing Arteta’s full-back positions with a reasonably priced addition. However, Frimpong has played exclusively on the right flank of a 3-4-3 system under Xabi Alonso and may find adapting to Arteta’s four-at-the-back system challenging.

Meanwhile, talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook recently revealed to GIVEMESPORT (January 8) that Arsenal is considering moves for defender Jorrel Hato of Ajax and left-back Miguel Gutierrez of Girona. In an attempt to get back on track in the top flight, the Gunners will play in the Premier League again on January 20 when they host Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium. On January 30, they will visit Nottingham Forest.
