Manchester United should fire Erik ten Hag, according to former striker Michael Owen, due to the incomprehensible style of play.

United lost 3-1 to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon, their second straight Premier League loss. Marcus Rashford gave Pep Guardiola’s team the lead early on, but goals from Phil Foden (2) and Erling Haaland made it a fairly comfortable victory.

It was expected that United would aim to frustrate City and hit them on the counter-attack during the match. They rode luck in the first half, but by halftime, their strategy was paying off.

However, they were unable to register a single shot during the entire second half and were unable to register even a single touch on their hosts. Even though City deserved praise for their performance and for keeping United scoreless, Owen still doesn’t understand the Reds’ game plan and has admitted he doesn’t know what they’re going for.

“I said it a couple of months ago about getting rid of Ten Hag,” Owen said in response to a question about whether United should fire Ten Hag during Premier League productions. It is my belief that they ought to do so.

Obviously, the manager isn’t solely to blame. The teams leave for a game. The quality of his signings has been rather low.

I continue to follow United’s progress, but I still don’t understand their goals. “Oh, they are a ball-playing team and they love attacking,” I would say to someone who doesn’t watch football how Manchester City are like a basketball team.

“The following teams: Aston Villa, Tottenham, and Liverpool. Any one of those teams can elicit an opinion from me.

In response to the question, “Who are Man United?” By “I don’t know,” I mean mine. Does their game revolve around possessions? Defending oneself? Just relax? Incompetent group? A mediocre group? To be honest, I don’t.

That has to originate with the boss and the way we intend to play the game. What I mean is, I can’t make out that path. Their current form is defined by a 6-2 loss at Man City while playing open, attacking football with five or six excellent moves.

“Okay, they aren’t good enough because of certain players, but that’s how we are going to play.”
