As Jürgen Klopp’s team gets ready for a hectic start to 2024—three games in ten days at the beginning of January—they have a number of injury concerns.

Darwin Núñez and Diogo Jota’s goals put Liverpool ahead of Burnley 2-0 on Boxing Day, regaining their top spot in the Premier League.

Jota, who just made a comeback from injury, scored a late goal to secure the victory at Turf Moor, and young Jarell Quansah and Virgil van Dijk maintained their defensive partnership. Liverpool has been playing well despite the absence of a few key players, and they take on Newcastle United on New Year’s Day.

Jürgen Klopp will have to deal with several injuries prior to that match. Here’s the most recent information on that front, along with possible return dates.

Tsimikas Kostas

The Greek defender was substituted off the field last Saturday after a rough collision with Bukayo Saka of Arsenal. After Saka tackled him, he seemed to be in a lot of pain as he crashed into Klopp on the touchline.

Following Liverpool’s 1-1 draw, Tsimikas’ manager revealed some depressing news. “He [Tsimikas] broke his collarbone at least,” Klopp clarified. That is very detrimental to us. It’s unclear when they might return, but it’s probably going to be a while.

Mac Allister Alexis

Regarding Alexis Mac Allister, he’s getting closer to recovering from a serious knee injury sustained during the team’s most recent 1-0 victory at Bramall Lane. The Argentine player missed multiple games due to an injury that was worse than first believed.

On Friday, however, Klopp shared some more upbeat news: “Macca and Diogo [Jota] are getting closer and closer, but they’re not ready for tomorrow.” That concludes it. It appears that a return in January is planned, though Newcastle may arrive a little too soon.

Joël Matip

The Liverpool defender, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury, is recovering from surgery. The 32-year-old will probably miss the remainder of the season because his contract with Liverpool is about to expire.

“Unfortunately, I anticipated that it would be an ACL rupture from the outset. That was how everything appeared. Very regrettable,” Klopp remarked.

Andy Roberts

The Liverpool defender, who missed time due to a shoulder injury sustained while playing for Scotland on international duty, is anticipated to return in January. After undergoing surgery to treat a dislocated shoulder, the Tartan Army captain has been sidelined, missing Scotland’s successful bid to qualify for Euro 2024 as well as Liverpool’s ascent to Premier League challenge.

Earlier this week, when talking about Robertson’s health, Klopp stated: “I spent a good deal of yesterday with him, and he’s doing well. The fact that the shoulder is somewhat absent is the issue. The remainder of the body is fine, but we will need to exercise some patience. It’s okay, we just need to exercise a little more patience.”
