Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp, among others, may soon face severe consequences for their actions, according to Jamie Carragher. The legend of Liverpool has called for the “stamping down” of Premier League managers’ antics, highlighting two in particular who require the most change.
Towards the end of the previous season, Klopp received a touchline ban for his comments regarding the impartiality of the referee. After the 4-3 victory over Tottenham in April, the German became enraged with Paul Tierney.
Following Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to Newcastle at the beginning of November, Arteta also lost it on the referees. The independent regulatory commission examined the case after the FA charged the Spaniard, but he has since avoided punishment.
Carragher thinks there may be impending pressure to alter the manager’s behavior. Additionally, he believes that two prominent managers who may be targeted are Klopp and Arteta.
Carragher stated: “I think it’s bubbling [the issue of manager behavior] and I think it does need stamping down” in an interview with the Stick to Football podcast. Potential targets for the full brunt of it could be Arteta or one of the managers, Jurgen Klopp among them.”
Carragher claims that Arteta’s portrayal differs from the character he previously faced. And he feels lucky to have escaped unpunished after his Newcastle charge.
“What fascinates me about Arteta is what I see on the touchline; he’s almost a completely different person than the player I played against,” the former defender continued. He wasn’t very sentimental.
“You’d never think he was at a referee or into his own players, but we played derby games, and he was one of Everton’s best players—a silky player. I believe that some of the bookings he has are excessively festive and unusual to the point where you think, “Come on, that’s not necessary.”
“However, I do believe he shouldn’t have gotten away with it. After being charged with saying certain things following Newcastle, his defense team claimed there was a translation error and that the phrase “a disgrace” meant something different in Spain. That was absurd.
In Sunday’s victory over Brighton, Arteta received his fourth yellow card of the year, and Carragher thinks that the referees are keeping a closer eye on the Spanish player than others. “He [Arteta] was clearly yelling at the referee, and the fourth officials said he went too far,” he stated.
“Considering how animated he is, it is obvious that they are searching for Arteta. At times, I feel as though he is so near the field that it would feel as though he is trying to shut you down if I were playing.”
