In a surprising turn of events, Detroit Lions star center Frank Ragnow has announced his retirement from the NFL at just 29 years old.

The news comes just weeks before the start of the 2025 training camp, catching fans and teammates off guard.

Ragnow, a four-time Pro Bowler, has been a cornerstone of the Lions’ offensive line since being selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Widely respected across the league for his toughness, leadership, and consistency, Ragnow battled through several injuries in recent seasons but remained one of the league’s top centers.

“This was one of the hardest choices of my life,” Ragnow said in a heartfelt statement. “Football has been my passion for as long as I can remember, but after years of battling injuries, I have to think about my future health and my family. I want to leave the game on my terms.”

The timing of the announcement is especially notable, as the Lions are considered strong contenders in the NFC following a breakout 2024 campaign. With training camp just around the corner, the team will now be forced to reshuffle its offensive line and possibly explore external options to fill the void left by Ragnow.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell called Ragnow “a warrior and a leader,” adding that his presence will be greatly missed both on and off the field.

Ragnow’s sudden retirement at such a young age highlights the physical demands and short careers often associated with life in the NFL. While fans are disappointed to see him go, many have expressed gratitude for his years of dedication and heart.
