In a stunning development just weeks before the start of training camp, four-time Pro Bowl center

Frank Ragnow has announced his sudden retirement from the NFL. The 29-year-old cornerstone of the Detroit Lions’ offensive line made the announcement via a personal statement released Tuesday morning, citing long-term health concerns and the physical toll of the game.

Ragnow, drafted 20th overall by the Lions in 2018, quickly became one of the most reliable and respected linemen in the league. Known for his leadership, high football IQ, and relentless effort in the trenches, Ragnow earned Pro Bowl honors in 2020, 2021, 2023, and 2024.

“This game has given me so much, but it’s also taken a lot from my body,” Ragnow said in his statement. “After long talks with my family and doctors, I know this is the right time to step away. I want to be present for my loved ones and preserve my long-term health.”

The timing of the announcement comes as a shock, especially with the Lions entering the 2025 season as legitimate Super Bowl contenders. With a strong core and momentum from last season’s playoff success, Ragnow’s presence was expected to play a key role in Detroit’s offensive strategy.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell addressed the media shortly after the announcement, praising Ragnow’s toughness and impact. “Frank gave us everything he had. He’s one of the toughest players I’ve ever coached. We’ll miss him dearly.”

Detroit will now turn to backup options or free agency to address the sudden gap at center. While fans are disappointed, Ragnow leaves behind a legacy of excellence, heart, and loyalty to the franchise.

His retirement marks the end of an era in the Motor City.
