In a move that has stunned fans and the football world alike, Detroit Lions star center Frank Ragnow has announced his retirement
just months before the start of the 2025 NFL season. Ragnow, a team captain and one of the most respected offensive linemen in the league, made the decision official in a heartfelt statement released Tuesday morning.
The 29-year-old veteran has been the anchor of the Lions’ offensive line since being drafted in the first round in 2018. Known for his toughness, leadership, and elite play, Ragnow battled through multiple injuries in recent seasons but continued to perform at a Pro Bowl level. His departure leaves a significant hole in Detroit’s offensive front and raises questions about the team’s depth heading into a year with high expectations.
“This was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make,” Ragnow said. “Football has been my life, but the physical toll has become too much. I want to walk away while I can still enjoy time with my family and live a healthy life after football.”
The announcement comes as a surprise, especially considering the Lions are seen as serious contenders in the NFC following a deep playoff run in 2024. Head coach Dan Campbell expressed support for Ragnow’s decision, calling him “the ultimate warrior” and “a leader we’ll miss every day.”
With training camp just around the corner, Detroit will now look to young linemen and possibly the free agent market to fill Ragnow’s massive shoes. While fans are disappointed, many have already taken to social media to thank Ragnow for his dedication and grit during his time in Detroit.
Ragnow walks away with respect, admiration—and a legacy that will be hard to replace.
