Manchester United
I was instructed by VAR not to give him Red card: Refree confessed as VAR Officials and referee Suspended for misconduct TODAY.
Casemiro’s goal secured Manchester United’s opportunity to perhaps conclude a lackluster season with a trophy, as Erik ten Hag’s team narrowly defeated Nottingham Forest to go to the FA Cup quarterfinals against Liverpool.
Ten Hag secured the Carabao Cup in his first season but faced mounting pressure in his second season, especially if they were defeated at the City Ground.
Last year’s FA Cup finalists showed great determination, and Casemiro scored from Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick in the last moments to secure a 1-0 victory against Forest and advance to a highly anticipated quarter-final match at Old Trafford.
The 89th-minute goal, confirmed after a lengthy review by the VAR, has kept United’s season alive after being eliminated from Europe in December and falling out of contention for the Premier League title.
United’s victory is a much-needed boost for the team, which recovered from their loss to Fulham and managed to escape extra-time before the upcoming derby against Manchester City.
Ten Hag’s team enjoyed the most promising possibilities in the first half, although Forest had 14 chances after Antony, one of three changes from Saturday’s heavy loss, struck the crossbar barely four minutes into the game with a first-time shot from Fernandes’ low cross.
Diogo Dalot delivered a precise cross that Scott McTominay headed from close range, but it went directly to Matt Turner.
The visitors aimed to disturb the out-of-form Forest substitute goalkeeper, whom Marcus Rashford sent over the net as Ten Hag’s team searched for an uplifting first goal.
Forest had overcome a difficult start and were now doing well, with former Liverpool striker Divock Origi and target man Taiwo Awoniyi causing issues for the opposition.
Improvised left-back Sofyan Amrabat faced difficulties, and Manchester United’s midfield left openings that Nottingham Forest failed to capitalize on, as their opportunities did not result in high-quality scoring chances.
If it weren’t for a fantastic save from Turner at his near post, Nuno Espirito Santo’s team would have been behind at halftime. This save came after Dalot skillfully evaded danger and delivered a cross to McTominay.
Both teams remained the same after the interval, and Forest started with more energy.
Elanga, a graduate of United Academy, fought and competed against Awoniyi to make Onana save a powerful shot, which was followed by Onana punching away a strong effort from Origi.
Ten Hag’s team regained control and started asserting themselves. Rashford’s penalty requests were turned down after being squeezed between two Forest players.
Fernandes attempted a wide shot with the outside of his right foot, but McTominay’s low effort missed the goal as Manchester United controlled possession and had more shots in the second half.
Amad Diallo substituted Antony due to ineffectiveness and failed to make a clean connection on a blocked Alejandro Garnacho attempt, while Rashford missed the target as they persistently attempted to score.
Forest had a limited reaction, as Casemiro attempted a shot as time ran out, but United remained focused on their objective and earned a goal from a set piece in the 89th minute.
Fernandes delivered a free-kick from the left side to the near post, where Casemiro’s header redirected it into the goal, leading to enthusiastic celebrations.
Forest just avoided having a player sent off in stoppage time when Felipe grabbed Fernandes’ throat.
