By terminating Sergio Reguilon’s loan early in January, Manchester United and Erik ten Hag committed a grave transfer faux pas.

The €10 million-rated defender became an emergency loan signing for Man United in September when injuries kept Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw out of the game.

Reguilon made 12 appearances for the Red Devils during his brief four-month tenure. He turned out to be a respectable choice for the left-back position.

Although he wasn’t very good on defense, he did offer excellent support going forward.

After Shaw returned to the team in late November following his recovery from a hamstring tear, United decided to end his loan agreement in January.

Malacia was also anticipated to make a comeback in mid-January following two knee surgeries.

Ten Hag did, however, disclose last week that the 24-year-old is still not well enough to rejoin the team.

Cutting Reguilon’s loan arrangement appears to be a snap decision.
A precautionary measure forced the Dutchman to replace Shaw during halftime of United’s 2-1 victory over Aston Villa.

The England international was replaced at left-back by Victor Lindelof, who performed poorly.

With Aaron Wan-Bissaka also sidelined due to injury, the United manager currently has only Diogo Dalot as a senior full-back available.

Dalot, a former Crystal Palace player, could have played left-back if Ten Hag had been healthy.

In retrospect, it appears that the Red Devils made a terrible decision in terminating Reguilon’s loan.

It would have been better for the team to have the 27-year-old on it.

We think that United made this decision primarily in order to reduce the cost of wages.

United believed they had the room to reduce the size of their squad after losing both the League Cup and the Champions League.

Dalot has been a very effective right back. Ten Hag’s current injury problems would have an easy fix if Reguilon was still a United player.

Compared to Lindelof, the Tottenham defender is unquestionably a better full-back option.

In the final few months of this season, United and Ten Hag would like to think that their error won’t come back to haunt them.
