Heading into the 2025 NFL season, the Detroit Lions are viewed as one of the top contenders in the NFC.
With a high-powered offense led by quarterback Jared Goff, dynamic weapons like Amon-Ra St. Brown, and a strong running game, expectations are sky-high in Detroit. But one potential issue is beginning to draw attention — the offensive line.
Once considered a strength of the team, the Lions’ O-line now faces uncertainty. Injuries, aging veterans, and depth concerns are starting to raise red flags. Starting guard Jonah Jackson departed in free agency, and while Detroit drafted reinforcements, it’s unclear if the rookies are ready to step in and perform at a high level immediately.
Pro Bowl tackle Penei Sewell remains a cornerstone, but questions remain on the opposite side, where Taylor Decker has battled injuries and showed signs of decline last season. The interior line, particularly at center and left guard, also looks thinner than it has in recent years.
Analysts warn that without a reliable front line, even the best offenses can stall. “If Goff doesn’t have time to throw or the run game can’t get going, Detroit’s entire game plan could suffer,” said one NFC scout.
The Lions still have time to address the issue, possibly by adding a veteran free agent or making a trade during training camp. But with tough defenses like the 49ers, Bears, and Eagles on the schedule, protecting the quarterback must be a top priority.
Detroit has the talent to make a deep playoff run, but in the NFL, games are often won and lost in the trenches. If the offensive line falters, it could derail an otherwise promising season.
