“Harry Kane inspires Bayern’s turnaround – but he’s not the only England star smashing it in Champions League
English superstar Harry Kane leads Bayern to a comeback, but he isn’t the only one who’s killing it in the Champions League.
There appears to be no letup in Harry Kane’s phenomenal first season in Germany.
With the English striker at the helm, Bayern Munich faced Lazio in the last-16 of the Champions League. The Bavarians needed a comeback after falling behind 1-0 in the first leg.
It was a relief for Thomas Tuchel’s team that Kane was there to allay their fears and get them through.
In a 3-0 victory that advanced Bayern to the quarterfinals, the 30-year-old scored twice, with Thomas Muller also finding the back of the net.
With these goals, Kane’s season total increased to 33. He scored 27 in the Bundesliga and 6 in the Champions League.
Good news for Gareth Southgate as England prepares for Euro 2024: the Champions League has produced some other standout performances besides Kane.
Not only has Kane scored six goals and assisted on three more, but three other English stars have also reached seven goals this season.
Three of these players—Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham, and Bukayo Saka—have scored three goals apiece in the top competition in Europe this season.
At least one of Kane’s goals this season will be to surpass his own personal bests.
Having played 33 times this term, he needs 49 games to reach last year’s total, but he has already surpassed it in 16 fewer games.
Now that he has scored 33 goals this season, Kane’s current campaign is the third most productive of his career.
The striker already has his sights set on having his best season ever, and he needs just two more goals to tie his second-highest goal total of 35 from 2016–17.
No one would dare wager against England captain Harry Kane equaling or surpassing his best season of 2017–18, when he scored an incredible 41 goals in all competitions, with only eight goals remaining in the season.
But after an incredible career devoid of any hardware, the prize he truly desires is a major trophy.
