Following Casemiro’s involvement in Manchester City’s second goal in Sunday’s 3-1 derby loss at the Etihad Stadium, former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes slammed him.

United were completely outplayed after taking a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to a goal from Marcus Rashford that could be considered for the award. Phil Foden scored twice in the last ten minutes of regulation time; first, he scored an incredible equalizer from long range.

In stoppage time, after wasting a golden opportunity before halftime, Erling Haaland finished the scoring with an icy finish. Although Foden’s opener was top-notch, United could have done a better job of defending City’s goals.

The second goal came from a beautiful one-two between Foden and substitute Julian Alvarez; Casemiro was unable to follow Alvarez into the penalty area, so Alvarez was able to double-kick the ball past Andre Onana. When Casemiro couldn’t halt the move, it was a major letdown for Scholes, a midfielder.

“Just look at Casemiro in that one-two,” Scholes said to Premier League Productions. As a holding midfielder, in a defensive position, that is absolutely wrong!

“The gap shouldn’t be that far and Casemiro, with the experience he has got, should not be getting done with a one-two there.”

With a 1-0 lead at halftime, United’s performance in the first half was commendable. In their pursuit of an equalizer, they had caught City on the counter-attack and pushed themselves in front of everything the home team threw at them.

United drew back in the second half, becoming increasingly isolated as City ramped up their pressure. According to Scholes, the gap between the two teams became much more apparent in the second half.

After falling behind, United lacked the solutions Manchester City had; they aren’t as good as the Citizens and can’t hold the ball for more than a few minutes at a time, he continued. That quality is lacking in them.

Your main focus should be on preventing a 4-1 or 5-1 score instead of regaining a 3-2 lead. When they draw to play that way, it looks fine, but when they actually play, it looks terrible.

United has to try to put pressure on City by sending players like Rashford and [Alejandro] Garnacho down the flanks, but they’ve never been able to get a sustained spell of possession.

The midfield held their own defensively for a while, but City is just too good to give you any kind of advantage. Putting your stamp on a game isn’t easy.
