After Manchester United’s derby loss to Manchester City, Paul Scholes slammed Casemiro for what he called “criminal” defending.

Marcus Rashford scored a breathtaking goal from 30 yards out in the first shocking goal of Sunday’s match at the Etihad Stadium, which United took just eight minutes into the match.

With a screamer of his own, the hosts equalized through Phil Foden, who scored for the hosts. Foden scored twice in the last ten minutes of the match after a brilliant one-two with Julian Alvarez; in injury time, he scored again with a tap-in from Erling Haaland to seal the 3-1 victory.

Casemiro, who had earlier scored the game-winning goal in United’s FA Cup victory over Nottingham Forest last week, played well for the majority of the match. Unfortunately, the Brazil international did not respond quickly enough to City’s second goal, as he lost possession of Foden and let Alvarez through.

Because Scholes expected a player of Casemiro’s experience to handle that phase of play considerably better, the United legend was unimpressed with his efforts.

Scholes noted Casemiro’s performance during the one-two as he spoke with Premier League Productions.

While defending, in the holding midfield position, that is absolutely wrong. Casemiro, given his background, shouldn’t be getting by with a one-two there, and the gap shouldn’t be that wide.

While United did their best to defend their one-goal lead away from home, City’s superior play ultimately proved too much.

With the game tied at 2-1 at the end of regulation time, eight minutes of injury time were added. However, Scholes conceded that United were more likely to equalize in that time than City were to extend their lead.

According to Scholes, “Once United went behind they didn’t really have the answers,” meaning that United lacked the quality and ability to maintain possession for more than a few minutes.

Even though they became somewhat identifiable towards the conclusion, they lack that quality.

Instead of trying to get it back to3-2, you’re more concerned that it won’t be 4-1 or 5-1. When they draw to play that way, it looks fine, but when they actually play, it looks terrible.

When United are down a goal, they need to put pressure on City by sending players like Rashford and [Alejandro] Garnacho down the wings, but they’ve never been able to get a sustained period of possession.

The midfield held their own defensively for a while, but City is just too good to give you any kind of advantage. Establishing dominance in a game is challenging.
